9to5mac revealed yesterday (https://9to5mac.com/2019/01/28/facetime-bug-hear-audio/) that FaceTime running on iOS has a major security vulnerability.

Using the Group FaceTime feature, it is possible to hear the audio from another persons phone before they have answered it.

This would be particularly worrying if you had your device on silent or hadn’t noticed the person calling.

For now, the recommendation is to switch off FaceTime on your devices, to prevent inbound calls via that method.

Switch off FaceTime on iOS

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll down to FaceTime
  • Disable FaceTime using the slider button in the top right

Apple have said “We’re aware of this issue and we have identified a fix that will be released in a software update later this week.”

They have temporarily disabled Group FaceTime messaging (https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/). Hopefully a security update will be made available shortly.
